Hospitals are no fun. In fact, they can be downright depressing for someone who is stuck there after having surgery. Often, the patient lies there watching television, sometimes for days. Why not give them a special get well gift after surgery to help with the healing process?
Think comfort
While hospital beds are adjustable, sometimes a squishy microbead pillow placed under the arm, legs, or shoulder can give relief to sore areas. Buy several and include soft chenille or fleece throws for warmth and comfort.
Sometimes following surgery a patient cannot bathe for a period of time, leaving the patient sticky or sweaty feeling. Look for alcohol-free facial or body wipes so that the patient can freshen up while in bed. Toss in a small container of scented powder and dry shampoo to finish the process.
Think mind stimulation
Watching television rapidly gets old when you are stuck in the hospital. Grab an assortment of word or math puzzles, a deck of cards, magazines, and books to give your loved one something to do to distract themselves for hours.
If they are artistic, pick up a few watercolor supplies or a drawing pad and pencils. Some people also like to document their hospital and healing experience, so a pretty journal and pen would also be a welcome gift.
Think sleep quality
Hospitals make it very difficult to get any sleep, because of all of the 24-hour a day noise and activity. Buy the patient a pair of good quality ear plugs and a comfortable sleeping mask. Some masks are hollowed out around the eyes so the wearer can blink without pressing against the mask.
Soothing scents also aid in sleep. Lavender is especially good for relaxation, but so are bergamot, chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood, clary sage, and frankincense. Essential oils are readily available at health food stores. A drop or two on a pillow or cotton ball placed in a small dish by the bedside makes for an aromatherapy sleeping experience.
Think decadence
If their physician-recommended diet allows, treat your favorite patient to a basket filled with gourmet goodies. An assortment of dark chocolates, mixed nuts, flavored popcorn, fresh fruits, or cookies makes for a great change from bland hospital food.
Special pampering goes a long way, too. Find scented lotions, creams, balms, soaps, and foot care essentials in the patient's favorite scents. Put all of these in a pretty basket tied with a colorful ribbon and surprise them with the gift of tender loving care.
Use your imagination and your knowledge of the patient's hobbies, tastes, and preferences to create a special get well gift they will always remember.
